Components on many types of Hydraulic Hose and Tubing Assemblies are connected by rigid tubing. Being rigid, however, tubing can transmit vibration from one component to another throughout an assembly. Increasingly, designers of hydraulic systems are integrating bent tubes and hoses into hybrid bent assemblies. Metal tube is economical and exhibits a long service life. For equipment manufacturers, bent tubing has traditionally offered additional advantages over hose such as:
better heat dissipation
smaller allowable bend radii
lighter weight (which is important on long boom arm applications), and
the ability to handle pressures above 6,000 psi.
Hydraulic hoses might look simple but they are carefully engineered multi-component assemblies that include reinforcements, a tube to carry the fluid, and a cover to protect both the reinforcements and tube. The reinforcements, for example, can vary depending on the pressure levels the hose will experience,
Most hoses have three functional layers—the tube, reinforcements, and the cover—assembled in a flexible “laminate design” or “composite structure.” Being flexible lets the hose move, flex, easily route through bulkheads, dampen pressures surges, and withstand vibration (as compared to rigid pipe or tubing).
Hoses are built and tested according to industry specifications such as SAE and EN. Engineers should be familiar with specifications related to equipment the hoses they design will go on. They provide guidelines for dimensions, material properties, and minimum performance characteristics for major types of hose and couplings.
The tube conveys the fluid and is commonly made of rubber compounds and plastic. It’s critical that the tube resist fluids it carries and is exposed to; permeation by chemicals; and both high and low temperatures.
